What Can a Cosmetic Dentist Do About Too Much Space Between Teeth?

A cosmetic dentist can close gaps between teeth. Medically termed "diastema," a gap between teeth most likely affects the two upper front teeth. However, some people are perfectly happy with the gaps in their smiles. Certain celebrities even consider it part of their signature look. Some gaps are significant, while others are barely noticeable. Either way, those not as pleased with the spaces between their teeth can seek the services of a cosmetic dentist to close them. If you feel you have spaces between your teeth that do not fit your personality, a cosmetic dentist can help.

Causes of diastema

Diastema often results from a person's genetics—it tends to run in families. In some cases, the size of a person's teeth may be too small for their jawbone, and teeth are spaced far apart as a result. Diastema may also result from an overgrowth of gum tissue that causes a space between the front teeth.

However, diastema can also be related to habits. For example, the thumbsucking habit common to children can contribute to this condition. In addition, incorrect swallowing reflexes like a tongue thrust can also lead to spaces between the front teeth. Therefore, patients who wish to fix the spaces between their teeth should also address any habits that might have contributed to them.

Ways that a cosmetic dentist might address diastema

The approach that a dentist decides to take when it comes to closing a gap between a patient's teeth varies based on factors like how wide the gap is, the condition of the patient's teeth, and how much time and expense the patient wishes to commit to treatment. First, let us review common treatments that a dentist might recommend to those with diastema.

Composite bonding

Composite bonding is the least expensive way to fix gaps between teeth, and the procedure does not require making any permanent alterations to the patient's teeth. Instead, it involves applying a composite resin, color-matched with the rest of the patient's teeth, to the space and filling it up. Then, the composite is hardened with a curing light and polished to give it a shine like real teeth.

Repairs made with composite bonding can last up to five years with good oral hygiene. Composite also involves the shortest time commitment when it comes to treatment. A dentist can complete the procedure in a single visit. Therefore, the patient leaves the clinic with their smile restored.

Braces/clear aligners

Sometimes, a space between teeth can result from improperly aligned teeth. When this is the case, a dentist might recommend fixing the source of the problem by improving the alignment of the patient's teeth. Orthodontic appliances, like braces and clear aligners, are typically used for this.

Clear aligners are the more popular option nowadays because they allow patients to improve the alignment of their teeth without having to deal with metal brackets and wires. However, treatment with clear aligners only works for some. Those likely to lose the aligners or forget to wear them for the recommended 22-23 hours per day should consider braces. There are even ceramic braces that blend in with the color of teeth for those who still want a discreet option. Treatments with orthodontic appliances can last anywhere between six months to two years.

Veneers

These thin shells cover the front part of teeth, hiding all the flaws. In addition, dentists use them to fix several aesthetic issues, including spaces between teeth. The dentist does this by placing oversized veneers on the two teeth closest to the gap. Doing this covers the space, improving the patient's feelings about their smile.

The installation of veneers requires removing a layer of enamel that is proportional to the thickness of the veneers. This is a permanent process that cannot be reversed in the future. Therefore, teeth prepped for veneers will always need restorations to protect them.

Things to note

No matter which method a person chooses, they must commit to continued oral hygiene. Those who choose orthodontics must follow proper cleaning protocols for cleaning in and around their appliances. Those who choose veneers or bonding should avoid foods that could crack their cosmetic dental work. Also, those considering whitening their teeth should have that procedure before receiving composite bonding or veneers. The material that makes up bonding or veneers will not respond to teeth whitening procedures.
