We care about how our teeth look and want our pearlies to enjoy optimal health. But do our lifestyles support those goals? We are here to share important facts on dental hygiene that folks generally tend to take less seriously than they should!
Soda ain’t good
Even though the number of Americans drinking sugary beverages on a daily basis has dropped, a majority still loves their soda. The problem starts if you drink too much of it every day. Those who drink three or more glasses of soda a day have 62% more tooth decay, loss and fillings than others. Try to cut down soda consumption to a glass a day and slowly replace with cool water. On a different note, drinking one or two sugary drinks each day increases your risk for type 2 diabetes by 25%.
Flossing is not overrated
Although an Associated Press report from two years ago made news for suggesting there is little proof that flossing works, the American Dental Association (AMA) stands by flossing as a preventive approach. Flossing helps prevent tooth decay and gingivitis. So, don’t give up on it. Where you should exercise care is in the way you floss. Effective flossing is gentle yet effective rather than aggressive, in which case you are certain to feel pain while flossing.
Brushing after meals is unnecessary
The Academy of General Dentistry says that brushing your teeth soon after a meal can cause acids from food to damage tooth surfaces and gum tissues. Instead, you can rinse with water, and alternatively, chew sugarless gum.
